How do you remember to do something when it’s a new part of your routine?
Sharon Salzberg, world renowned meditation teacher, says very simply, “Mindfulness isn't difficult, we just need to remember to do it.”
So how do we do that?
Here are a couple of ideas:
✨ Put a sticky note somewhere that you’ll notice with a simply worded reminder- perhaps the name of the technique you want to do. Move that sticky note every few days so your brain does not start to override it by getting used to seeing it in the same spot.
✨ Set an alarm- perhaps a chime or bell to go off a several times a day. When that happens, pause what you are doing and do the practice.
Here’s an example a friend shared with me when she was adding gratitude practice into her life: She set 4 chimes per day on her phone. When the bell would chime, she and her family would stop what they were doing, wherever they were in the house, and would shout out 3 things they were grateful for right then. Then they’d return to what they were doing and keep going. (Added bonus is the silliness and joy embedded into that practice 🥰)
✨ Attach the practice to something you do very regularly. For example, everytime you wash your hands, do a 5 senses practice; everytime you send a text, do a breathing technique; whenever you enter a new space, take a mindful moment.
✨ Keep it simple at first and work your way up to more. Choose 1 practice you’d like to do over and over again until it’s made its way into your daily routine. Establish a habit that fits mindfulness practices into your already existing daily routine. Once you’ve successfully done that, you can switch up the practice or start adding in more. Perhaps you’ll feel the benefits so much that you’ll create dedicated space for them in your day!
